At 2:45 PM today the power came back on. It was like Star Trek, when Scotty gets the engines back on line. Lots of stuff to do, but we'll be open for real tomorrow. I'm still not shaving until the power comes back on at home (another 7 to 14 days). Man do I look […]

Like many thousands of other folks, we have been without electric power since Tuesday noon. KVC has running water, but no power, no heat, no hot water, no lights, no work. At home we have hot water and gas range, but no heat, no lights. We are blessed with plenty to eat, plenty of family. However, I'll […]
I'm off to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association annual winter meeting for continuing education. Lots to learn, but I can't say I'm looking forward to spending most of my time sitting down for the next four days (driving or in lectures). Just another part of the job.
I started my veterinary career with the viewpoint that "Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor", not a pet-store operator… or a boarding kennel operator, or any other non-doctor type thing. After all, I've got way too many hats to wear just as the doctor: pediatrician, obstetrician, dentist, radiologist, surgeon, pharmacist, internist, dermatologist, etc. Then, as a practice owner […]
Lot's of stuff going on lately. Today I started at 7:30 AM, and worked without a break until 1:30 PM, when I was able to grab my lunch/breakfast. Not much time for blogging, but I'll catch up some stuff soon… maybe. You may remember the Prodigal Great Dane. We saw her on a follow-up a […]
There's an old cowboy saying: "Don't tell people about your troubles. Half of them don't care, and the other half are glad you've got them." On the other hand, if somebody actually asks, "How are you?", you could pretend that they actually want to know. Instead of replying with a perfunctory, "Fine, how are you?", […]
A veterinarian in general practice is used to being expected to know a lot. I don't know about guys in the city, but people have asked me to identify snakes, mastodon fossils, and suspected human remains (cow bones, as it turned out). Late night calls (from people without Google): "Do polar bears eat penguins, or […]
My sister, Leah Mobley, is the director of the DDAC (Dunklin Day Activity Center for developmentally challenged adults). Her dog, Toodles, had some skin tumors removed recently and came back for suture removal today. She made the visit a field trip for the DDAC clients. They met some dogs, walked some dogs, and helped with […]
If you saw the previous post, you may remember how skinny and awful Pepper looked. After a few weeks of regular groceries, she is much improved. The best news is that her attitude is even more improved. She is trusting, friendly, cooperative and obedient, and very cheerful in her new home. I predict that another […]
Not so long ago, I posted on a case, noting that goats are not our specialty. Danged if we don’t have another broken-leggedy goat today. This one is a little fresher, thank goodness, and I think has a pretty good prognosis for return to soundness. She’s a little kid, still growing, so that helps. Her […]
